What Is Functional Healthcare?

Treating the Whole Person,
Not Just the Symptom

Functional Healthcare is a holistic approach for restoration of health and prevention of disease that looks beyond an individual's symptoms. It blends the evidence-based results of Lifestyle Medicine with the systems-based philosophy often called Functional Medicine. Unlike many models of care that stop at managing symptoms, Functional Healthcare restores balance and builds resilience. The use of evidence-based lifestyle interventions (nutrition, sleep optimization, stress management, avoidance of toxins and risky substances and positive social connections) as a primary modality for restoration of health and prevention of disease is widely recognized as an effective approach for many of the chronic conditions prevalent in our society. By uniting a lifestyle-based approach with a systems-based, root-cause philosophy, Dr. Ward delivers care that is science-driven, practical, and sustainable in real life.

Certified ReCODE™ 2.0 Practitioner

The Bredesen Protocol® for Brain Health

ReCODE™ is a personalized, precision approach for supporting brain health in individuals experiencing or at risk for cognitive decline. ReCODE™ is built on decades of groundbreaking research by neurologist Dale Bredesen, MD, a leading expert in Alzheimer's disease. Dr. Ward has been using the Bredesen Protocol® since 2017, and is a certified practitioner of ReCODE™ 2.0, the most advanced version of the training available. The ReCODE™ program includes identifying the numerous metabolic factors that drive the symptoms of cognitive decline based on your medical history, genetics, and laboratory biomarkers. Dr. Ward provides a detailed, personalized plan to address these factors, using a lifestyle-based approach that includes nutrition, movement and exercise, sleep optimization, stress management, detoxification, supplements and hormones and brain-stimulating activities.

Autoimmune Disease and Chronic Inflammatory Disorders: Getting to the Root Cause

Functional Healthcare Offers an Alternative to Symptom Suppression

At 17, Dr. Ward was diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder. Conventional treatment offered him symptom management for life. A functional approach gave him long-term remission, and it set the direction of his career.

Autoimmunity develops when an overburdened immune system turns on your own tissues. Triggers accumulate: environmental toxins, chronic infections, inflammatory foods, and increased intestinal permeability, often called leaky gut. Medication can quiet a flare, but suppression alone never answers why your immune system is on high alert. Dr. Ward starts with advanced lab testing and a detailed health history, then builds a personalized plan around the imbalances they actually reveal. This approach supports people living with:

  • Hashimoto's thyroiditis
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Lupus
  • Fibromyalgia, chronic pain and fatigue
